Abstract

Particle arrangement was quantified based on Local Void Ratio (LVR) distribution for clean, coarse-grained tailings specimens. These specimens were subjected to aging with the same equal all around pressure in a triaxial chamber for three durations ranging from 15 hours to approximately 20 days. Prior to retrieving the specimens from the triaxial chamber, the specimens were stabilized with a binder while still in the pressurized environment in an effort to preserve the soil fabric. The LVR distribution for each specimen was then acquired directly on representative prepared coupons using optical microscopy and imaging techniques. The LV R distribution measurements indicate that a shift in the uniformity of the soil fabric takes place as a result of aging. Specifically, the LVR distribution of the sand specimen aged for 15 hours was less uniform than that of specimens aged for 100 hours or 500 hours under the same conditions.
