Strategies for change: a presidential perspective on governing the NCAA

Established in 1910, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has gone through a multitude of changes to become the largest membership intercollegiate athletic association in the United States. It was not until 1951 that the first President of the NCAA, Walter Byers, was needed to manage and lead this membership through the issues of amateurism, financial aid and competition. Today, these issues are still relevant, but in terms ofa much larger scale of more than 1200 NCAA members. This chapter garners a perspective from current NCAA president Mark Emmert as he leads college and university presidents, athletic directors, student-athletes and other stakeholders through the ever changing governance of the intercollegiate athletic landscape.
