A Retrospective Evaluation of a Nurse Practitioner-Led Cancer Genetics Program

Background: Genetics research is not routinely disseminated into gastroenterology clinical practice, thereby missing opportunities to identify hereditary cancer syndromes. Aim: To identify effectiveness outcomes of a nurse practitioner–led cancer genetics program. Methods: The Donabedian model was used to identify program effectiveness outcomes. A screening tool was administered to 10,324 patients. Conclusions: Pathogenic variant carriers were identified in 35% of patients tested. Program screening and surveillance met effectiveness outcomes criteria; tumor testing as a method of screening did not. Nurse practitioner–led cancer genetics programs integrate evidence-based guidelines and provide person-centered care to enhance quality care outcomes.
