Abstract
This essay clarifies what is meant by “pluralism” as well as terms such as “culture” and “multiculturalism,” especially as they relate to the political thought of Augustine. After discussing Augustine's experience with cultural pluralism and the questions it gives rise to, the argument turns to the relationship between multiculturalism and democracy and takes up the question of Augustine's thought about the latter. The essay goes on to explain the significance of Augustine's reflections upon Donatism and warfare as they pertain to his political thought. The conclusion of the essay emphasizes Augustine's preference for prudential judgments rather than rigid rules in deciding political affairs.
