Marianne K. Poxleitner
- Professor, Biology
My primary goal, as a professor, is to share my passion for science with our students. I help them understand what is known and encourage their curiosity of what is unknown. As a scientist, I use classic molecular and cellular biological techniques to investigate various aspects of biology. I currently have two main areas of inquiry in my lab including the study of bacteriophage, viruses that kill bacteria, and genetic modifications of conifer trees to enhance their natural characteristics.
A new project in my lab explores innovations in synthetic biology. Students work closely with me to learn cutting edge molecular techniques in SynBio to create new gene combinations for use in diagnostics. We utilize methods and materials from the international iGEM program to develop microbial systems capable of detecting and signaling environmental changes. Students with all levels of experience are welcome.
