Takeshi Barnes

Ph.D.

Dr. Takeshi Barnes is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Kinesiology & Sports Management at Gonzaga University. He is a certified athletic trainer and strength and conditioning specialist whose work bridges exercise physiology research with applied practice in sports medicine and human performance. Dr. Barnes earned his PhD in Kinesiology from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, where his research involved conducting human clinical trials and exercise training interventions. Particularly, his work involved employing stable isotope tracers to track the fate of ingested protein and understand how nutrition and exercise influence muscle protein synthesis and related physiological adaptations across diverse populations. He also holds a master’s degree in Exercise Science & Nutrition from Sacred Heart University and a bachelor’s degree in Athletic & Exercise Therapy from Camosun College. His teaching interests span the breadth of exercise science, and he draws on both laboratory research and clinical experience to prepare students for careers in athletic training, strength and conditioning, and related health professions.
